View Full Version : Jaunty proposition: Time-based usplash progress bars.

I want to make a proposition for Jaunty, but I don't know where to do it.
It's about a time-based usplash progressbar.

I don't know if Jaunty will still use usplash, but if it does, check this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=985390

This is already a working solution, for Intrepid.
The technology is already implemented, we just have to use it!
The progressbar looks much more beautiful, gives more useful information
because it displays the accurate time until Gnome, and boosts usability.

Can anyone point me to where we can make official propositions?
Thanks!
:)

And now you can also install ubuntu-smooth via Ubuntu PPA:

Interesting solution for Intrepid. I tried it out and it seems alright, aside from a few possible routine things like HDD checks. Better than it being all jagged like the default one. Then again, with Jaunty's supposed focus/goal towards boot speed and applications, who knows?

Interesting idea--would be nice to put forward on Ubuntu Brainstorm. < http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ >I think that it would help what we currently have.

Personally, I am really hoping for Plymouth to make its way into Ubuntu--no jarring changes between grub--kernel load--gdm & desktop.....

You should mention it on ubuntu-desktop mailing list, and maybe ubuntu-devel-discuss. That's where it's most likely to be noticed by the people who make decisions.

You can also create a blueprint for Jaunty and brainstorm idea would be nice to see how many folks are interested.

Great idea :) Installed in Intrepid on my P4 - unfortunately I get no progress orange bar in the box (box is there but no bar). I'll try it on my other machines.

I would choose Plymouth over Usplash ANY day!
But if it does not make into Jaunty, let's at least improve what we have!

And the blueprint is here (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/usplash-smooth)!
Thank you a lot for the directions!

I'd prefer for Plymouth to make its way to Jaunty.

I'd prefer for Plymouth to make its way to Jaunty.

Everybody does!
This package here is only a small improvement step.
There is no denial that usplash is fated to be removed someday.
Ubuntu developers are just waiting for alternative solutions to mature enough.

The ubuntu-desktop mailing list would be a good place to get some developer feedback

splashy still seems to be under active development judging by the mailing list, i'm assuming theres technical reasons that it isnt more to the forefront in ubuntu (though there seems to have been a few forks early on). it always seemed easier to work with although i havent looked into it in a while. it did seem quite well done and easy to work with from a laymans point of view though

The devs won't adopt splashy because the technology splashy uses breaks suspend/hibernation. That is why it hasn't got more of a look by the devs.
