How do,

I am a Computer Science student, a recent convert to Linux, and waiting for my Ubuntu CD to arrive in the post, so I can throw it onto my Laptop and work on my Java assignments.

Anyhow, here is my question, can you please detail the packages I will need and how to install them so I can program, and run Java 1.4.2 applications, applets etc.

Also, can you recommend a good programming environment for me, I am used to TextPad on windows, and a nice and simple programming enviornment would be nice to continue in. But i really must learn how to use eclipse.

So yes they are my questions.
-Thank you

I like to use gedit for coding. It's got text highlighting, and you can set your preferred tab length. It doesn't have a built in compiler/debugger, though.

I use jEdit (http://www.jedit.org/), and have so far been very pleased with it. From what I've seen of TextPad, it looks similar, so you might give it a try.
