Ive been going back and forth with WinXP and Ubuntu since 6.10 i believe.
I recently bought a Compaq Dual Core notebook with 3gig of ram, it was preloaded with vista. I wiped it and installed Vista 64 bit, used that for a few weeks, wiped it and now installed my current os...8.10 64 bit.
Im really happy with this release and i look forward to using it exclusively until Windows 7 comes out sometime next year.

Funny that you keep switching...
Is it because you're not satisfied with what the current operating systems have to offer?

Don't set your hopes for Windows 7 too high. Some early reports (http://http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/11/10/46TC-windows-7_1.html)[infoworld.com] are looking like its just going to be a publicity stunt (e.g. a new gui and the same garbage under the hood).

at first i thought Windows 7 will return to the XP route but after testing RC in VM I think it's just another Vista which is a total failure.

Explain how vista is a total failure....i used it without any problems. I in fact like vista, i just happen to like Ubuntu more.
Usually the only people who badmouth vista are those who have outdated PCs that cant handle running it....

Id like to answer the "Explain how vista is a total failure....i used it without any problems"
I could write a book on the issues with Vista, I will keep it short and just highlight my main issues:
1. Backward compat - Its a sad state of affairs when Wine is better at running older Windows code than Windows.
2. Memory footprint - Its enormous, and I have never really understood what Vista offered over XP that could not be achieved through 3rd party software.
3. Bugs/security holes/memory leaks - All common for the Vista user.
4. The fact that so many people wanted to downgrade to XP and even more didnt even bother purchasing it.
5. The fact that MS relied on it to keep the Windows package going, and in doing so sent more users to Mac and Linux.
6. The fact that business does not want it, and as a result of Vista has lost faith in the MS name.
7. The fact that Vista has been the cause of so many anti MS comments on almost any tech forum.
I could go on, I wont.
BTW Did MS ever decide what the minimum requirements for Vista were? I know people with high spec rigs that couldnt get that old mother of an OS working at an acceptable speed.
Quote "Usually the only people who badmouth vista are those who have outdated PCs that cant handle running it.... "
-Lol. Enough said. Although maybe you should consider what Vista was originally deemed as working on, and the pre-installed machines with Vista that had just as many problems. MSwatches favourite shiller even acknoledges this, when he tried to blame the sellers of PC systems not up to the task of Vista.
Now Im not suggesting that socomoddjob is an MS Shill, but what I would say is that we are going to get alot of posts in the coming months from MS shillers. They are going to work on the lines of saying "Vista's not bad, I prefer Linux, but I cant wait for Windows 7" in a dire attempt to generate interest for a platform that has burnt its bridges as far as users are concerned.
The question I would like to ask of socomoddjob is that, if there was no problem with Vista, what do you like better about Ubuntu? To me if an OS provides functionality then Im happy with it. If Windows could offer me that, I wouldnt be here. So why are you? What makes you look forward to Windows 7, when, by your own admition prefer Ubuntu to Vista? Isnt it possible you will find the same with Windows 7? So why make such a sweeping statement about a package not yet released?
Maybe Ive spent too long on MSwatch and Boycott Novell, maybe I see a conspiracy at every corner, but I find it very strange that a self confessed Windows user who prefers Ubuntu is looking forward to Windows 7 which hasnt been released.
Maybe its just me. Mark my words though, shiller or not, we will see MS distancing themselves from the Vista name in a couple of months to prepare for Windows 7.

Return to the XP route? You mean, printer drivers being able to cause BSoDs, massive security flaws resulting in virus and spyware epidemics, everyone running as root and then complaining when their nephew deletes their system32 folder, bad 64-bit support, an ugly 2D interface, no support for the new generation of hardware that's around the corner, poor performance from the scheduler, requiring command-line use just to batch-encode WMAs, overenthusiastic use of virtual memory, wearing out SSDs quickly due to lack of support, no support for SATA controllers in the installer (requiring use of a floppy disk drive!), and the requirement that you buy a professional license just to use multiple CPUs?
Thank god Windows 7 will not "return to the XP route". We've long criticised Microsoft for releasing crap operating systems. It would be hypocritical of us to insist that they returned to the past.
