View Full Version : [ubuntu] Wireless works on old laptop, but not new one!

I have two laptops right now (I got a new one yesterday).

I'm on my new one right now using my USB Edimax connector because Intrepid doesn't seem to be able to detect my wireless card.

On my old one, I had Hardy first and couldn't get any wireless without the Edimax connector. But after upgrading it to Intrepid, I was pleasantly surprised to find wireless working out of the box.

So instead of installing 8.04 on my new laptop, I jumped straight into 8.10 expecting wireless to work as easily as it did on my old laptop. The reason I believed this is because both laptops are from Toshiba.

However, this didn't work for me. I'm here using my Edimax connector (which makes me glad I hadn't sold it yet) and really want to get wireless working again.

I also checked my Hardware Drivers menu and found that instead of just a graphics card driver, I now have a graphics card driver and a driver for "Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards"

I also checked ifconfig.

So if anybody has ideas on what course of action I should take, please let me know.

I hate to bump and everything, but it's been quite some time. I need to get this problem solved.

Do both the laptops have the same wifi card ? Post the output from lsusb and lspci please. Maybe from both laptops

I hate to ask again, but I'm just not sure about what course of action to take. I don't know if I should try using ndiswrapper again. My inability to figure it out was the reason I bought this USB connector in the first place.

your new laptop has pci "Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter"

your old laptop has usb "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless Adapter"

wireless works on the old laptop, and not the new one, because they have two different wireless cards, therefore they use two different wireless drivers

to get the wireless working on your new laptop i think you will need the madwifi drivers

im not entirely sure because i have never used that card

you could double check whick driver you need by doing some google searches for AR242x driver


EDIT:
also you should not need to use ndiswrapper with either of those cards because they both have native linux drivers

I found a guide when I searched Google for that. I followed the instructions and now wireless is working absolutely perfectly!
