isn't qt for kde? why does that need to be installed for installation of virtualbox?

No, the take up some space on your hard drive is all. You can run KDE apps (I like K3b for example) on Gnome or Xubuntu (or a custom installation) without any slow down. Same applies to virtualbox and the libqt files.
FYI (I think you understand, but just in case or for others), Virtualbox uses these lib for the gui interface.
