The problem I experience with apt/synaptic is as follows. I update the sources and synaptic will show what to update and what is new and what has not been installed. Thats as it should be you say. But what happens now is that if I should exit/close synaptic and then later restart it none of the downloaded updates is availible anymore. In fact I have to download all the updates again from scratch. There is no reason for this behavior that I can see. If somebody else have a idea what has gone wrong and how to correct the problem I'd be pleased.

try changing update type in synaptic from say breezy to highest or default and then refresh exit then change synaptic preference back to your original and refresh-mine did same when I installed kde also if you look in help on synaptic and limitations you may fix it that way
