View Full Version : [ubuntu] Internet security / stealth ports

This seemed like the most appropriate place to ask this:

I did a scan of my Ubuntu 8.10 laptop using a website called ShieldsUP (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2). Now i realise that this website isn't the ultimate resource to go to for internet security; but when scanning my system's ports, they were all stealth except for port 1 which according to Shieldsup is labeled as "tcpmux TCP Port Service Multiplexer. I was wondering if there was some way to make this port read as stealth. Other than this one port, all the other ports on my computer achieve stealth capabilities.

Im a little paranoid when it comes to internet security so please bear with me if this is completely unnecessary. If you can give any help, it would be greatly appreciated.

First it is considered impolite to bump your own posts in anything less then 24 hours.

Second, I suggest you do a little reading on security rather then worrying about "Stealth" on Shields up.

Ask yourself , What is a stealth port exactly ?
Why is that you think a stealth port is any safer then a closed port ?
If you do not know the answer to those first two questions why are you worried if your ports are stealth or not ?

Is shields up scanning your computer or your router ? Do you have a router ?

http://www.grc.com/port_1.htm

Just checked it on my PC and GRC confirms port 1 is stealthed.

Running Dapper 6.06 via an ethernet router though so all my ports are stealthed. :-)
