[edit: how embarrassing, after I posted this, I retried the drivers in hardware manger, and this time, they worked fine. I would delete the thread if I could work out how. Duh]

Hello lovely people,

I can see from searching the forums that many people have had this problem, and I've tried some of the suggested solutions, but can't crack it. So, sorry if this has in fact been solved in a thread I haven't found.

Problem: fresh, clean install of 8.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1501. Ethernet works fine. Can't get wireless to work. Wireless card is a broadcom BCM4311. I've tried using the drivers that pop up in Hardware Manager, disabling the BC43 one and just using wl (as suggested elsewhere). I also tried a solution that involved installing the driver manually through a terminal, but no joy. Any ideas?

Me: complete linux noob. Don't overlook the possibility that I'm doing something really stupid, and if you do have a walkthrough solution, dumb it down to the extreme.

Thanks in advance. What follows is the info requested by the sticky on how to compose posts like this...
