right now im using linux mint 5 with gnome interface. i notice it is based off of hardy heron but the kernel is older. i want to upgrade it to 2.6.24-19 instead of 2.6.24-16. can this be done and if so is it safe ?

It's been a month or more since I used Mint 5, but I seem to recall the newer kernel being available but "held back" if you check in Synaptic. I seem to recall trying the "unsafe" updates in Mint 5 and indeed breaking things! I'd ask at the Mint Forums to be sure.

OTOH I'm currently using a small test hard drive with both Intrepid and Mint 6 RC1. Mint 6 RC1 seems quite stable for me.

It's probably better to wait until Felicia is out and then upgrade to that when it's released (currently RC1, so it must be due soon). Have a look at this (http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa.php#upgradeInstructions) which will give you advice on upgrading. This probably rings true for trying to upgrade the kernel and it's probably best to do a clean install when Felicia (Mint 6) comes out.
