Input/output Error from File Copy Operation to 1.5TB External

I've got a brand new external hard drive. In the last few hours it has started misbehaving, I can read from it just fine, make folders, move files around, copy a few files back and forth - but if I try to run a substantial (~1GB) file copying operation, it will freeze at some point and then give a file i/o error.

Any ideas as to why this might happen?

Ubuntu 8.10
HP Pavilion 2550 laptop
Maxtor 1.5 Basics External HDD + formatted to NTFS

Seagate owns Maxtor right? so you could also be suffering from the same problem as everyone else:
