I updated to 8.10 last week without any problems and dint experience any problems 'till this afternoon's reboot. The desktop showed up correctly but all programs open in a vertically reduced windows, like seen in the screen shot. I can reduce windows size and then manually draw the size to the whole screen, but clicking on the max windows button it snaps back to the uncompleet size. Also the Skype notification are pops up on this "elevated level" of the lover window border....

Do you have compiz turned on?
There is an option there that you can disable that sets all windows to certain width and height.

no compiz..... it worked all great until reboot after the updates this morning...

I guess its more the just some adjustments. As you can see on this screen shot the notification area of Skype appears on the lower border of the (incorrect) maximized windows. Normally this area appears in the right clover corner right above the lover panel...

well I rebooted yesterday twice with no change, but this morning everything was cool again... I allways knew about the miracolous selfhealing power of Ubuntu!

well - the problem showed up again.. I though to make a fresh install of 8.10 and did that yesterday.. I rebooted and everything looked fin - until this morning: same problem with window size. Additionally the drop down menu in OO are displayed wrong: the drop down menu is attached to the right of the highlighted are in the menu bar and flush to the title bar, hiding the words of the following menu to the right...

any ideas how to tackle this?
