Dear friends,

I happen to have vista for some free programs, beside my Ubuntu 8.10.
I just happened to login on windows and saw the ad download office 2007 trial. For curiosity I decided to download. After typical incredibly stupid circular usual windows treat for at least 15 minutes, I saw it is only for US residents...Nothing at all mentioning this at the beginning.
It would be too clever.

I *loathe* windows.

Thanks for reading this, and more important, much more thanks to everybody who works in *any* Linux project.

It was a very smooth and perfect experience to install the Ubuntu 8.10. A breeze. I have friends who came to grief with older hardware though.

Kind regards, Zuheyr

have them try Hardy 8.04

you have to match the right OS with the right hardware. and there are alot of distros to choose from.

glad to hear you are enjoying ubuntu.

Thank you for replies.

I did suggest a friend 8.0.4 and it is fine. I have a 5 yr old Acer laptop and I run Ubuntu 7.10. Upgrading to 8.0.4 proved bad, I reinstalled 7.10.
I do not miss anything.

On a more recent small laptop I use 8.0.4. Perfect.

On my new Dell Inspiron I use Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit. Very happy.

Thank you all!

Regards, Zuheyr

exactly. you have to match the os to the hardware. that's why i always have about 30 distros on hand. i have every iso of (k)(x)(u)buntu since 4.10, and many others, so i am ready for any kind of hardware configuration/limitations. i size doesn't fit all, and if more people realized this, they would be alot happier. i just installed xubuntu 7.04 for someone because it was a better fit for a slightly older machine. try different things and use what works.

if someone can not find any distro that will work well with their hardware, chances are their hardware is defective or they have some really exotic parts. plus, a little patience goes a long way.
