I'm in the process of having a comic book made, and I'll be doing the "inking". I have a program for Windows called "Comic Book Creator". That program lets me add a variety of speech bubbles and add stylized and customizable text to the original art. Only problem is... it's for Windows. ;)
Is there a Linux alternative for such a program? Something I can load a background image into and create speech bubbles and other text with the fonts of my choosing?

I am sure their are other ways to do it but, you can use Inkscape and The Gimp. You first draw it out on paper then capture your work in a scanner or camera and process it in The Gimp. Import the bitmap into Incscape and do the vector drawings.
The magazine Linux Format in the December 2007 issue has an article on how to do this. I believe you can get reprints from their web site.
For comic book lettering fonts available as public domain go to:

Hope this helps.
