ALL of our Externals are now Maxtor, they are usually only a tad higher than Seagate (for the same warranty time), but hold up much better, look nicer too for that matter. Seagate is higher on the longer warranty models.
Stay away from Hitachi and Samsung for sure!
I can't say anything about Fantom as I've never owned one yet.
I've had an IOmega that died in under a year replaced that with a Vox V1 eSata that died, was replaced free and that one died too. Their warranty is only good for ONE replacement!

For internals we usually buy Western Digital, Seagate is the same price and has a 2 year longer warranty. But I've not had any Western Digital die early on me yet!
Other's may not have been so lucky!

Has anyone tried a Kanguru eSata External yet on Ubuntu?
I hear they require a setup and they only provide Doze and Mac support.

Just get a Maxtor, very well supported I think.
