Can't record in Audacity or Sound Recorder

I've read a few threads on this issue and they said to delete pulse audio and set all the sound playback and recording settings to ALSA 'default'. I have done that and I am sure that Pulseaudio is deleted. However, I still can not record sound at all. Another interesting problem is that in Audacity, when I look at the "about audacity" I see that pulse audio is still a core library, I am not sure if this is relevent or not, but I'm trying to give you guys all the information I have.
