Greetings:
Based on some of my searches, I am seeing indications that Ubuntu has some abilities that would enable it to perform some of the functions of a NAS.
Is this true? If so, can someone tell me how to stand up an Ubuntu- based NAS?
Thanks.

Any Linux distro should be able to fill the role of an NAS machine.
For Ubuntu, just install the server and then either NFS or Samba for file-sharing. Check out the Ubuntu Server Guide (https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/).

I was also considering this after I found that my current Synology DS-101j had reached "end of service" just as I installed the new ireversible firmware that broke the hdd hibernation (goodbye hdd)
I was thinking about using a eee box and Ubuntu with some cheap external hdds, so my question is if there is some easy way to make the hdd's sleep (as in spin down) after say 10 minutes?
If anyone has any experience with Ubuntu running as a NAS please say so :)

you might want to look at www.freenas.org
Its highly configurable and works great. I have a 3rd party NAS at home that runs a re-branded and stripped down version of it. I plan on building a new NAS at the end of the year and will be using it.
