Ok, I can create menu's via, DeVeDe or Tovid, and they work fine. However I want to get a fancy menu. I had a friend finalize a DVD that I put together in Linux. He was working on Vista, and opened up the regular Windows Movie maker, selected a menu, and burn the DVD in a matter of about 15 minutes. The menu, I must say was quite impressive. The menu flashed through pictures that were taken from the video in a smaller picture format in the background. All he did was select this menu from a list of menus. So, I'm not going to install windows, forget that! I would like to have a background menu that is similar, perhaps a slideshow or something of the effect in the background of the menu. Is this possible with Linux? I don't mind cli or gui, just would like someone to point me in the right direction here. Thanks!!!

(I usually use dvd-slideshow cli to create my dvd's they are usually slideshows of pictures)

We can't be outdone by Window$.

dvdauthor is the most complete tool. It's complicated, though.
dvdwizard automates many dvdauthor's tasks.
mandvd provides an easy gui
dvdstyler is cool, too
dvd-slideshow converts single jpg's into a dvd, and, methinks, also creates a menu.

etc, etc, etc

Yes, I'm familiar with all of these, but to my knowledge, you cannot create a menu with a moving background in them. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) I want to make a nice menu setup. The dvd movie is not a problem.

I see. Sorry, I read your post too fast and shot from the hip.

I actually did it once. Got tired with all the effort. I cannot remember the whole process very well. I think I got it from http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/Gap-Animated-Dvd-Menus-3579-1.html or maybe http://www.kaybee.org/~kirk/dvdauthor.html

Sorry, I'm not sure.

Wow, you are right, there is nothing simple about that! I tinkered around a bit, but didn't figure it out. Well, I guess we will have to wait for someone to come up with a way for people who aren't programmers.

I've done some DVD menus (moving backgrounds and Icons ) unfortunately i had to go back to a Windows Program to get the best out of my ideas.

Try www.Mediachance.com program called DVD-Lab Pro2 (it's NOT cheep!!) but if it's more than just a passing phase creating DVD menus it's one of the best and easiest programs to use. But i invested in the Pro version 2 years ago when i was still Using Windows and i love it!

It runs perfectly in Wine!!

If you have used tovid, then you missed the todisc script which is included with this suite. ( or for gui: todiscgui )
Some examples and docs are on tovid.org.

THANK YOU!!!! That is incredible awesome, and not sooo complex. I did it, and it worked, although, I certainly have some tweaking to do to get my desired results, at least I got results!

I double clicked on the thank you icon to see if I could click it twice before it disappeared to give you 2 thanks, but it didn't work. Just know that you were thanked twice on my part.

shane2peru,

I found the guide I used: http://fabiana.web.elte.hu/doc/linux_irasaim/emlekeszetetok/avi_to_dvd.txt

Also: http://linuxreviews.org/man/any2dvd/

But I can see many more people contributed with more useful posts ;-)
