permissions on eSATA drive

I have been copying some files from my internal hard drive to an external SATA drive (a MyBook external)

generally, when I power on (with the drive attached), I find that I can write to SOME of the folders on the drive, but not all.

then, after an hour or so, for some reason this changes, and the whole drive is read-only, I can't write to any folders on it.

today, when I powered on (with the drive attached) I find that I can NOT write to any of it - the whole thing is read only.

is there a SUDO command I can use? the drive is formatted in Mac. is there anything I can do to fix it so that I write info to the thing?

thanks!
