how come i can only log in to this forum from my windows box (as did for this)

if i go to my ubuntu box and enter exactly the same username and password , it doesn't log me in. There's a very deceptive page that says "Thanks for logging in" , er, only it hasn't

thanks

dave

Java isn't needed for the forums, but javascript probably helps.
Make sure that javascript and cookies are enabled in your browser.

Did you use exactly the same URL in both? It's http://ubuntuforums.org.

After the login Thanks there is a second line about if your aren't redirected to click here. Also it will give your user name on hte first line. I would suspect that your browser settings are different between the two machines.

I usually have Java and Javascript turned off - I can still log into the forums (but posting is painful). Cookies can be a problem - even enabled, sometimes going back a couple of screens loses my login (via Firefox).

Do you have the some problem using other browser in Ubuntu, or is the problem just with firefox?

Probably just sometjing wrong with your profile - try this in a console:

firefox -ProfileManager

make a new profile, and see if the new profile has the same problems.

yeah, i'm posting this from a new profile in firefox

do you reckon a purge and re-install would clear the default profile ?

No afaik it wouldn't, the profiles would remain.

Delete the default profile, and then create a new one.
Or delete .mozilla folder in your home directory.
These will get rid of all the info stored for firefox, your saved passwords, bookmarks, history and stuff, so make a backup first.

deleting/recreating the default profile seems to have done the trick
