Hi everyone. New Ubuntu user here.
I've been using Ubuntu for about a week on an old computer, and have a love hate relationship with it. I'm going back to school in January for a computer science degree, so I decided I might as well get used to this type of operating system.
Frankly, I love Linux.
And I hate it.
In the past week, I've somehow destroyed my xwindow, threw out KDE, and broke my package manager.
But because of a great community here, I've gotten help quickly and have been put back on track.
Thank you all for your help, and now, I must go figure out how to get that neat window-on-fire effect when you close a window. :)

Install compizconfig-settings-manager from synaptic and have a play with that ;)

Silly question but can one actually purchase a laptop/Desktop that has already the system Ubuntu installed on it,for I have never been aware that a system such Ubuntu exists before I signed up on this?

There are now a couple of manufacturers who sell computers with Ubuntu pre-installed. Have a look at Dell's website or google for System 76.
However, what you are saying is actually pointing to a big problem for open source: the vast majority of computer users think that Windows is something that is hard wired into their computer and that there are no alternatives. I think that this is slowly changing, but I have no reliable data.

I believe there was an instance Dell offered PCs bundled with Ubuntu. I'm not sure if they still have it now. Some of the mini-laptops however come with other Linux flavors, I still haven't seen one designed to run Ubuntu.

my wife's HP/Compaq V6000 laptop runs much better with 8.04 Ubuntu than the vista it came with.

Mm. I don't see why they shouldn't - it's at no cost to them.

Had a look at System 76 - with free software the prices are a bit high. I have just bought a 15in Lenovo with Vista for less than that and it took Ubuntu with no bother.
