Hi! I'm very interested in turning my ubuntu-pc to a computer that's specially fit for programming, designing and music production/recording. First I'll ask about the mustic production part... I wonder what softwares I'll need to make my computer suitable for a music production computer. I want to be able to record multiple tracks, edit and mix it, and maybe have some built-in sounds like piano, choir, drums, etc. What softwares would you guys recommend for this?

Thanks :)

ubuntu studio. or the better i am sad to admit . but use 64studio instead. i found that distro which is debian based to be way more mature for audio production than ubuntu studio. maybe ohters do not share this experience.
good luck with it.

Thanks, but I was kind of thinking of packages and programs to install. I have Ubuntu 8.10 and I would like to keep it :)

hydrogen for drums is great. audour for multitrack recording . audacity for quick editing.
jack is needed to make it all work. i play acoustic guitar bas banjo and use mostly the hardware solutions so adwise also to use the money on good mics and mixer then use what ever in the resporitories you can find usefull . i do some computermusic sometimes also. thats where i like the 64studio since it comes prebuild whit all the stuff i need. of course i understand if you want to keep ubuntu. i rather have ubuntu also for many things also and i have more than one pc. so i choose the other distro for my music since it takes lot less work to get up and running . but i think the package ubuntu studio is what you need. other than that just search for some things and set up as you go along.

There are a few decent lists -- I reccomend looking at http://apps.linuxaudio.org and http://www.jackaudio.org/applications as places to start browsing available apps.

My shortlist would include Ardour, Audacity, Pd, Freewheeling, Hydrogen, Rackarrak and Zynsubaddfx oh and patchage.
