Sorry I can't seem to post, so I'm just trying it out here.

I'm trying to post a thread but I an't it just hangs and ask if I want to download a php file.

I think I've established it's the code bit of the thread that is doesn't like.

has anyone else experienced this?

I'm in the UK with Orange Home Broadband.

It's not the code bit. I changed my xorg.conf file to a txt and tried to upload this and again after a few minutes produces the same error.

Not sure exactly what it is.

Have you tried closing and re-opening your browser? Or restarting your pc completely? I find mine sometimes does that with firefox (not the foggiest why) but a restart will usually fix it.
