Hi, this sounds like the usual update problems. Error message in meta-index file. Sources.list and result of apt-get update shown below. Is the problem the "main'."shown in line 7 ? Can I just edit out the "'." ?

Ya, it looks like thats what you need to do but all of "main'." need to go, not just the '.'. In the future just back up your sources.list and try it out. If it doesn't work, you can just restore it.

This is proving more difficult than I hoped. I think I'm missing out a vtal link in updating this file and going round in circles.

What I'm doing is entering gksudo gedit, editing the file, then entering sudo apt-get update. Should I be reinstalling the file before running apt-get ? In your message you mention backing up my sources.list, how do I do this ?

All sorted out now. I wasn't saving the file in gedit. Thanks for your help. I've learned quite a bit in the last day.
