and then return to the desktop when I'm finished?

the terminal is under applications you really dont need to shutdown gnome

Well... You have several options:
1 - ALT-F2 and type the command for the terminal you want (ie: konsole)
close it when you are done...

2 - use yakuake

3 - use tilda

4 - switch to another console CTRL-ALT-F1 and back when you're done CTRL-ALT-F7...

Hi scudworths23.

Click on applications> accessories> terminal.

When you're done,click on the x at the top right corner of the terminal screen.

Ctrl + Alt + F1 then Ctrl +Alt + F7 to return to graphical desktop.

i like this way, first open a terminal and type or copy/paste the following:


sudo apt-get install nautilus-open-terminal

after it installs, log out and then back in again.

that will give you the ability to right click on the desktop (or in nautlus or just about anywhere) and choose "open in terminal". :D
