Hi there,
i need to download a video from a firewire camera.
Which software can i use?
Which software allows me to edit the output?
How can i burn a DVD?

Kino is well known for capturing from firewire connected cameras. You can export to dvd as well.
Have a look to other apps as well : avidemux, kdenlive, blender, cinelerra (if you want the most performant editor, but needs some time to learn), lives, pitivi.

Is it possible to download video from a non firewire camera that only supports usb. Older camera. I connect to usb but ubunty hardy doesn't currently recognize the port.

PLease, can somebody make me a ste by step guide showing me which program to use to:
- download the movies
- adding a transition between movies
- adding some text overlapped the movie
- adding an audio track over the original audio data
- adding an initial DVD menu
- write a DVD
Can Kino do all the works?
