That's strange...if you're using Ubuntu 8.10 (you are, right?) ar242x cards should work out-of-the-box. Perhaps the madwifi module is not being loaded for some reason. Does the interface come up if you type:
sudo modprobe ath_pci
or:
sudo modprobe ath9k
After running one of those commands and waiting a few seconds, you should see an entry for either 'ath0' or 'wlan0' in the output of 'ifconfig.'
If not, what is the output (in this order) of:
sudo modprobe ath_pci
lshw -C Network
dmesg | grep -e ath -e wlan

I grabbed one of the Walmart laptops too. :)
# lspci -nn | grep Atheros

# uname -a
Linux dworken 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:20 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
I was able to grab madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3875-20081105 and apply the aircrack-ng patch: madwifi-ng-r3745.patch
I was able to compile this and I can use:
wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode monitor
and then use airodump-ng and see networks, however I can not connect. I assume this has to do with the orange light on the wifi button, I believe until the push button turns blue that transmit is disabled.

Heh...funny thing. Yesterday, I found myself with one of those $298 laptops, too. My intention was to install Ubuntu 8.04 on it since 8.10 seems fraught with wireless problems. But the 8.04 disk won't even boot (has a modprobe failure?). I tried 8.10 after that, but the partition editor fails. I'm trying to resize the MS partition rather than blow it away (I'm not sure why). This morning I'm having better luck.
Sorry for the post, since its not relevant to your issue (yet). I suspect, though, that I'll be in touch.

I also bought one of these...inexpensive...laptops, and had the same problem.
Did a little searching through the forums, and found this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6075320&postcount=10
It works. I followed the directions, rebooted, and connected via wireless right away.

Caveat!
Some users (myself included) noticed that there's some connectivity issues using the method I posted in a previous link.
My apologies. In my zeal after finding a fix, I didn't notice the connection issues at first.
I've also tried this method.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6086847&postcount=2
After trying the second method, thing seem to be moving a bit faster, but as always, your results may vary...

hawas: you have a Broadcom-based wireless card. It looks like an interface is being created for it, so you should be able to see networks. You may need to install firmware, however. Try running:
sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter
If that doesn't help, please start a new thread and let us know the URL. Since your problem is not the same as that of the other posters here (who all seem to have Atheros cards), it would be best to start a new thread.
Everyone else: if the link provided by mordalo doesn't help you, I would try using the script from this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=798485), which will painlessly grab the latest madwifi source and compile it for you. ar242x cards should work with the latest madwifi.

My old laptop did almost exactly the same thing; with the wifi switch in airport/disabled mode you could see APs but not connect until you flipped the switch. On this Compaq laptop the wifi button cycled from blue to orange when you pressed it in vista, but it's only orange in Linux. I can see the access points just fine. I assume the people who are able to join an access point have a blue button, right? Any clue how to enable this in Linux? Since it's just a switch it probably can be removed/soldered off the wifi card.

The link from the first thread is broken because the file name (which is based on the date the file was uploaded, and it gets updated frequently) changed. Try:
wget http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2008-11-10.tar.bz2
tar jxvf compat-wireless*
cd compat-wireless*
make
sudo make install
sudo make unload
sudo make load
If that doesn't work, try changing the date in the part of the command in bold above to whatever is most recent at http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/
As for the second link also failing, it's the same problem. Try running the first three commands there as:
wget http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-current.tar.gz
tar -xvf madwifi-hal*
cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6*
The remaining steps in the second thread should still work as they're written.

I too have the $298 walmart compaq. I am using it right now connected via wifi. I had to get a new driver for the atheros chipset. I just followed the instructions from: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download
