I just started using Ubuntu, and it is my first Linux OS of any kind. One of the things that really made me want to try it is that I kept hearing how stable and secure it was. So is there any need to install/run firewalls, antivirus and antispyware? I have seen downloads for them but I'm not running anything right now. I have a wireless router if that makes a difference.
Sorry about being such a noob. I went from XP and Vista, and being the one that everyone else asked for computer help to something that is completely foreign to me. But so far I like it! And I haven't rebooted to get into Windows since! Or even needed to reboot for anything for that matter!!:)

That thread should help answer some of your questions. What you'll want to pay particular attention to is the "Windows Mindset"

It's a lot of reading, but it's good reading.

Happy computing.

Thanks! You're right, a lot of good info in there. Man, I wish I would have started using Linux years ago! I didn't apply all the changes it recommended do to some involving coding/scripting that I am unfamiliar with doing. But I did all the plug-ins and changed all the settings it mentioned.

When I switched to Linux (can't remember if it was dapper or edgy) I was impressed with how quiet it was, what I mean is I wasn't constantly given notices to upgrade anti-virus software, anti-adware stuff etc.

I can just use my computer without being nagged or bogged down.

That's one thing I noticed when I first switched to Breezy Badger back in '06. It just chugs along without so much as a whisper telling you what you SHOULD be updating and when.

You do have some things that notify you.. Update Manager does.. I uninstalled it though.
