Yeah, trying to learn more gimp after being so used to photoshop :D
http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/files/2/8/1/3/2/ubuntu.png
I made it by making multiple layers, and got the white lines by rotating the circle. The .xcf file had like 17 layers, every line and circle is on a different layer plus other touchups :D It looks like the real logo almost, iI just need more space between the thirds of the circle.
I got the colors from using hte "Color Picker" KDE Applet with the picture in the Ubuntu 5.10 help section of the forums. Took me about an hour to make, I messed up with my first attempt but got it on my second ;)
How is it?

Good on ya! Looks like the real deal. What are you going to use it for?
Edit: How'd you get the picture to show up in your post rather than as an attachment?
I'm making one at work (!) using 3D CAD and rendering, can't wait.

Well, I might use it for a couple sigs or something, i didnt really plan on doing anything with it , but now that you mention it I could use it perhaps...
EDIT: use the (img) blah (/img) tags, but replace the parenthesis with the square brackets.

Nice Work! I've been trying to learn The GIMP too. At first, I didn't like it much, but the more I work with it, the better and better it gets. I'm starting to realize it has way more power in several areas than Photoshop. Like tolerance for magic wand, in PS you usually choose between 1-100, but in GIMP, it's like 1-350 or some such. Control is good! Some things still annoy me, like when I crop, a stoopid window pops up in front of what I'm working on! But overall, GIMP seems engineered for control and efficiancy. I likey.
Keep up those layers! They are your best friend.
P.S. to Sutekh, have you tried Blender? I'm just curious. I love it!

Can this be used to upload images from my PC?

I like the GIMP over Photoshop, but to be fair to it, going from Paint to Photoshop was a lot harder than going from Photoshop to the GIMP. I didn't know about the tolerance for the magic wand, I imagine that'd be very useful!
Blender? No I haven't, but I take it it's worth a look? Because I'm at work (on WinXP) I'm using a solid-modelling CAD program to make the logo then render it to make it pretty. I'll look into Blender for my PC at home though, cheers.

Well, I uploaded my image to the ubuntu gallery, which you can by hitting the "gallery" tab near hte top of this web page, then putting it in teh appropriate gallery.
Then use those tags and put the direct url of hte image (it should be provided) in between them.
I tried learning blender, its hard, but 3d rendering isn't my thing and my friend preaches it :D

Well I just finished a 3D logo, it was surprisingly easy with the package I have at work.
http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/files/4/6/9/1/4/ubuntu3d.png (click here (http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/showimage.php?i=1413&catid=member&imageuser=46914), cos scaled down looks ugly, thanks arcanistherogue for showing how to setup images in the gallery too, muchly appreciated)
Now I know I'm not going to get any work done. :p (Now I need that Ubuntu font)

That's the truth. 3D work has a steep learning curve, especially if you're like me and rely on tutorials more than formal instruction.

Whoa! The big version looks waaaay better than the thumbnail. Nice job. :KS
Check Blender out:

It works great on Windows too. I've never used CAD, but my father uses it off and on for his work. He seems to like it. I was under the impression CAD was for seriously precise work. Maybe I'm thinking AutoCAD? Or are thery the same thing?
How much control over lights and cameras does one have in CAD?

I have Solidworks at my work, which is quite similar to AutoCAD, at least in terms of CAD and design in general. Solidworks also has an add-on called Photoworks, which is used for rendering and spiffying things up. You can choose the material, scenery, ambient and directional lighting, and much more. I got some inspiration from some collegues who work in Industrial Design, they do some amazing work.

very nice job both of you :)
lol i used The GIMP before i tried out PS, i feel more comfortable in The GIMP because well... i guess i felt lost looking through a whole differantly organised image manipulation program, also i like alot of features The GIMP has over alot of features PS has
And i tried blender but it wasnt a good idea to do that considering how very intense the graphics are, maybe programs such as blender will work better if i run on a stabler os :)

You guys should try Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) (its in the repos). I could never wrap my head around vector apps till this one. It will also export to .pov for you 3D POVray guys. ;)

Inkscape rocks indeed, I made an Ubuntu logo once to learn some functions. I also made a logo in Blender for my desktop (http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=1455&original=1). It's the same I used for my avatar.
(Btw, my gallery thumbnail (http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/showimage.php?i=1455&c=2) looks color deprived, do I have to upload additional images to prevent that? Can I edit my gallery entry?)
