can not change the screen resolution in ubuntu 8.1

i got lcd screen --dell e171fp-- its optimum res. 1280*1024 @ 60 HZ


i have recently installed ubuntu 8.1

the screen work on different res.
in system -> preferences -> screen resolution
the resolution is not exist

i was searching for the screen and graphics preferences window

any help will be appreciated
