Compiz uses your 3d hardware resources. I never use compiz so I never have a problem. It's a common problem. Probably to a lesser extent the more powerful video card you have.

I have upgraded a few of my machines from 8.04 to 8.10. My kids play some Windows games on one of them. Although we don't have compiz enabled on that machine, it appears that the multimedia performance has degraded since the upgrade, almost making them unplayable. Has anybody else experienced this, and have you found a solution?

Wine has been really slow with 8.10 32-bit and Steam games. Not cool IMO, it's the only thing keeping me on Windows.

Some older video cards are no longer supported with proprietary (restricted) drivers in Intrepid. It's possible you got migrated during the upgrade to the free (slower) drivers.
Double check at System->Administration->Hardware Drivers to make sure.
