making use of built-in IR device

My Latitude D800 came with a built in IR device. What are my chances of making any use of this?

Ideally I'd like to be able to use a standard universal remote with it...

Not familiar with this particular device, but in general this isn't a problem. Check out a program called LIRC. Still requires a little mucking around in config files, but it's straightforward and incredibly effective.

When I enable the IR device in the BIOS i need to set it to com1 com2 com3 or com4. Do you still think this is the type of thing I could get working with LIRC? I haven't had any luck thus far.
