View Full Version : Gimp pro's, help me with a simple wallpaper

Ok, I am a complete gimp newbie. Could someone help me out with putting together a simple wallpaper.

Here is what I am looking for.

I want the UGA logo below, but with a black background, and I am looking for the logo to have a reflective look and to have some depth (i.e. as if it were not flat). The logo should look almost like it is in the dark but with some faint lighting from one corner .

Think of a good batman poster from the dark night with just the batman symbol in the middle.

If someone doesn't mind playing around with this, I would appreciate it.

There's my 5 minute mockup, but I have to go to class now...

Wow, that was fast.

Sand, that is what I was looking for.

Bashveank, I like yours too, but the light on Sand's is a little better. I am keeping both though as they both look good.

Curious what anyone else can come up with. Maybe a little backgroud gradiant to go behind it.

Xoger,

I like where you are going with it, but, the light is a bit on the bright side, and the changes you have made to the shape of the G have taken it too far away from the UGA "G" look.

Thanks for posting though, I do think it looks good.

WOW Unutbu, that is nice. Can you put that "G" in the middle of a larger wallpaper though.

<<<<<<<That one was perfect for an avatar though.

I really like it. Right now you are in a tie with Sand's beauty.

Keep em coming folks, this is really nice work.

The steps to making this are as follows:
0) make a new 2560x2048 image
1) make elliptical/rectangular selections to form the logo. Save the selection to channels.
2) Using the selections, redraw the logo
3) Draw a black and white version
4) Blur the black and white version
5) Use Filters>Light and Shadow>Lighting Effects (use the BW version for the bump map)
6) Image>Scale Image to 1280x1024. (This helps hide some artifacts).

The smaller logo made yesterday also used Filters>Map>Bump Map and compositing of layers in 'burn' mode. The BW blurred image was burned on top of the logo.

Attached below are the xcf's.

Another take on the logo wallpaper in a 1600x1200 PNG, albeit a bit late. Thought maybe the reflection idea could carry over to a surface.

Wow!!!

When I started this thread, I thought I would get a few ok wallpapers back. But I am blown away with what has been posted here. Good quality and spot on to what I was looking for (maybe I should credit my awesome description of what I wanted :)).

This is also inspiring me to get into Gimp more and really learn its featurs.

Thanks to all, these are looking AWESOME.

Not as technical as some since i'm still learning / playing with gimp myself but here's a couple of stabs from me more along the batman idea :)

Nice Scooby. You are taking it into a different direction then the others, but I like it. The first one is neat with the light seeming to radiate out from behind the G, and the last one has a nice smoke to it while still having a pronounced G.

Great work.

Thanks :)

All 3 use the same background created using the cloud render filter and then the original logo on a layer above with transparency applied. The First has a supernova filter on the background, the other two have a drop shadow applied to the logo and then just different lighting filters applied to each. The second one was exported out without the original logo so it only shows the drop shadow to make it look more like a projected shadow :)

Glad you like :)

I think I'll drive over to Mike Lester's house and see if he likes this, too!

Good luck Saturday, by the way.
