The guys at codeweavers claim to have a simple way of setting up office 2007 with their crossover office program and I've heard good things about it...It will cost you though.

Paying really isn't a option because I'm only 15 ¬¬

Any alternatives... :(

If you have any of your own money you may be able to buy one of those prepaid credit card things at a store using regular old cash.

Regardless, you can try just installing Office 2007 with the latest Wine beta (1.1.7) -- it apparently largely works according to AppDB.

Word & Publisher are a must.

Maybe Powerpoint, but not too bothered, I can just about cope with the OpenOffice presentation thing.

A lot of people don't realize that under the "Load/Save" options in OOo, you can set the document defaults to the Microsoft formats. If a person did that, that would have Microsoft Office for free.

Configure, Change, or Set OpenOffice.org to Default Save Files in Microsoft Office Formats

Openoffice doesn't support .xdoc - last time I checked anyway.

& I really like how you can make professional looking documents easily on it.

I'm attached to 2007 (:

Openoffice 3 will use the docx format.

However, with what you describe (since you dont need outlook) you can use this link

and that should do it for you :)

there ya go. Office 2007 in Linux.

Microsoft office isn't that great of a program/application, just use open office! It's free, easy to use, and compatible with most other word processors. I believce that it also generally comes with ubuntu. Just because something is free, doesnt mean that isn't any good. In fact, I know many people who prefer open office to microsoft word.

No grammar checker
No synonyms (Thesaurus).

They are big things to me & I like the preset themes in 2007, all my coursework so far as been in the "Stacks" theme for header and footer; and I want it all to match.

If you're looking for a free alternative to CrossOver, I'd recommend Wine-Doors (http://www.wine-doors.org/wordpress/). I'm not sure if they have an installer for Office 2007 yet, but I ran Office 2003 on it almost a year ago. It has a great application management interface much like CrossOver.

Use google.com and answers.com for your grammar checker and synonyms.

Move it to ~/.wine/drive_c/system32 (or something like that). Or follow this, short, tutorial (from WineHQ):
Hi everyone!

The installation guides posted above didn't work for me, so here's mine:
1. Configure Wine to imitate XP or Vista. (I took Vista)
2. Download winetricks (www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks) and run it:
sh winetricks msxml3 dotnet20 gdiplus riched20 riched30 vcrun2005sp1 allfonts
3. Run the setup: wine setup.exe

Do NOT set rpcrt4.dll as native!

Word, Excel and Powerpoint (the most important apps) run without errors.
I haven't tested other things.

Tested on Wine 1.1.5

Yes there is Synonym in OpenOffice.org, it has been since version 2.x Just selct the word, and press Control + F-7 on you r keyboard.

Grammar checking has been implemented in OpenOffice.org 3. It is new so I don't trust it. But it is there :)

I already made Office 2007 run smoothly on my Intrepid box, that is just an easy task with some simple steps. The task doesn't need crossover/wine-doors or any wine tools at all, just wine. Maybe someone will ask me why i need office if there is a good OO as for substitution. Simply said that i need Visio to read my team mate documents but i don't want to dual boot or setup a virtual windoze box. That's why.

The thesaurus is terrible. Is there a way to get a better integrated one?

It just won't seem to work;
The installer just closes itself after a few seconds.
It's alright really, I'll just keep my Windows Partition.

MS Office runs perfectly using Virtual Box. I'm currently using VMWare but Virtual Box works just as well in my experience.

I've done it for a while because sometimes it's just easier to use to the MS version when collaborating on projects with Windows users. Never had an issue with Office in Virtual Box; I recommend it highly if you simply MUST have access to some MS products.
