My wife wants to purchase a mp3 player and im wondering which one to get.
Google mostly returns hits for older discontinued models under linux. So what do you guys use how well does it play with linux etc.

but it has been discontinued.
I've heard good things about the iaudio x5.

My Sandisk 256 MB player works just fine with all Linux distributions, Mac OS X, and Windows XP.

count me as another vote for the iRiver H340. Mounts as a USB mass storage device with no problems--drag your media onto it in Nautilus.
It also supports OGG: better sound and smaller filesizes than mp3...and it's a free, open-source codec. If you're going to run free software, I encourage you to buy from hardware vendors who support free software (including codecs) as well.
