Hi! I'm also new here!
I was using the "Static OSS" version on my Mini 9, and it worked though it was kind of slow. Then I went to this site:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=220791
And about halfway down there are instructions to download the Ubuntu version of Skype and rebuild the package installer so it works.
I was able to sign in and test both the built-in microphone and camera and that all worked. But I haven't had the opportunity to call anyone yet. I hope this helps.

Ther is an easier way to install skype on your mini 9
use the medibuntu version, it works like a charm and is the newest (Version 2.0.0.72)
You can go to www.medibuntu.org to download the deb or you can install the medibuntu repository.
to install the medibuntu repo

then to install skype
sudo apt-get install skype

Okay, this is great information. Thanks! Will this work with Dell's Ubuntu home grown re-mix, or does it require 8.10?

Finally got Skype on thanks to these forums. Now I'm getting a lot of hiss. I have been messing with the Volume Control HDA Intel ALSA mixer. I've got speakers about 3/4ths up and Internal Mic Boost about the same. Is this too much. I'm just trying to get enough playback volume when using the Skype audio self-test.

Ok, I'm an idiot. I've never used a mixer before. I was apparently mixing in microphone audio with my other audio sources and thus cranking up the vol. on all devices was giving me the HSSSS.
