8.10 and ATI driver problem

when i install the proprietary drivers (latest available through the hardware drivers option in the system menu) my screen flashes every now and again as if the screen is on standby, but when i uninstall it it doesnt happen, i would rather have the drivers installed so i have full functionality, any workaround? any help appreciated

My graphics card is ATI Radeon Xpress 200M

Well i don't know how to solve your issue, but i do know there is something up with ati proprietary drivers for ubuntu 8.10. I have 2 hd 3850s and they ran perfectly in 8.04, but now in 8.10 after i install the drivers, i can only get into text mode. No gui at all. It is really annoying
