View Full Version : [ubuntu] Computer freeze on Ubuntu desktop

I've had a new Dell desktop with Ubuntu already installed on it. Every time I've tried to use it, after logging in and going into the main Ubuntu desktop, the computer freezes completely, cursor, clock, and doesn't unfreeze at all. Control + Alt + Backspace does nothing, so I have to turn off and turn on again, but every time its the same.
I have managed to get in via Failsafe Gnome and I have updated to 8.10 and updated everything that was available on the Update Manager, but going back in via normal session it still freezes. Anyone have any ideas? A friend of mine thinks I might need to enable the proprietary graphics drives and configure them. I havent tried this yet. Restricted Drivers manager doesn't appear on Administration though.

The restricted drivers manager is renamed "hardware drivers"
If you did wish to install the Restricted Drivers Manager; the code would be-
sudo apt-get install restricted-manageror

I have managed to enable the restricted drive, but it still freezes in the normal session. Went it to xsession errors and the following appears:
** (nautilus:6334): WARNING **: Can not calculate _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS
** (nautilus:6334): WARNING **: Can not calculate _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS
** (nautilus:6334): WARNING **: Can not get _NET_WORKAREA
** (nautilus:6334): WARNING **: Can not determine workarea, guessing at layout
Also:
** (nautilus:6334): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported
Any ideas?

I am huwcook's said friend (who has been unable so far to fix this problem...)
Here is his xorg.conf if it is of any help :
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
#** sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
