Ok, so I don't mean to be annoying here. I know nothing about linux, other than it seems really great.
What I'm looking for is to buy a laptop on which to start my foray into the world of linux. I'm looking for something priced at a maximum of $799, but I want it to have nice specifications. Like, here (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-VGN-NS140E-15-4-Inch-Processor-Premium/dp/B001F50SIS/ref=pd_cp_pc_2) is a laptop that seems nice, but I don't know if for some reason it's just a bad idea linux-wise.
Someone please help. I realize this sounds like I want people to do my research for me, but I've been researching for two days now and I have absolutely no idea what's going on.
Thanks.

I wouldn't get real carried away with a super laptop. If you want to try and investigate Ubuntu I'd definitely add my satisfaction with it. I'm using a Dell B120, which is not a killer by any means. It does a great job at what you're hinting at, and it only has a 1.4Ghz Celeron. But the graphics and wireless G are good to go with Ubuntu.
Suggestions would be to look for a computer with WinXP Pro. I like the Lenovo right now, which my son has. He also likes some of the HPs. And I wouldn't suggest getting one of those smaller atom-powered types; thats what I'm basically running, and not a step forward.:-$:-$

I think the laptop you selected is pretty well spec'd for Ubuntu. I don't have much experience with Sony laptops and Linux but it is definitely powerful enough if that is part of what you were asking.

Well my main concern is compatibility. Actually, I'm not really sure how the concern of compatibility applies here. I know pretty much nothing. I just need a laptop to get started, but I want it to be a good one, at least to the extent it would matter.
So essentially, say I were to buy that laptop that I linked to and installed ubuntu on it. This would work, right? Is there some reason I just don't understand that would cause it not to work? This is just where I'm really unclear on the subject.

Just a suggestion. See my signature for the system I use Ubuntu on. No real problems with 8.04 on the laptop or desktop. Some Toshiba users have had issues. Cannot say much otherwise.

Dell sells laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled.
One thing to look out for is the wireless adapter used. You want to get something that uses an Intel wireless chip if you can. Atheros and Broadcom chips don't provide very good Linux support.

What country do you live in?
If your main concern is compatibility, you should buy a laptop with Linux preinstalled. Which ones are available depends greatly on what country you're in.
