I've tried the patches to modprobe.d/options and alsa-base suggested in this forum; but still cannot get any sound to play. The Sound Preferences correctly identify the Ensoniq ES1371 as the sound device.
Opening the VmWare preferences and enabling sound allows bringing up the Macintosh OS-X sound preferences which does play sounds; but nothing from the Ubuntu Sound Preferences.
The help screen within the sound server panel refers to a panel which doesn't exist in my Ubuntu sound preferences which is supposed to "Enable Sound Server startup." It's not there.
I must be missing something.
