Hi, has anybody noticed that when u install the ubuntu-desktop package in mythbuntu 8.10 (I'm doing it through the checkbox in the mythbuntu control centre), it misses several important packages, compared to 8.04? The packages i can think of are openoffice, pidgin, and many others. I'm going to remove and reinstall the package tomorow to see what effect it has.

I am not understanding why you would want all that on mythtv.

Why not do it the other way and install ubuntu 8.10 then add mythtv to it?

http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/ubuntu-desktop

shows that ubuntu-desktop does not require/depend-on items like open office or pidgin. This means that it is up to system configuration - or more exactly, which tool (apt-get vs. aptitude vs. synaptic) is used and how it is configured. Some will automatically install recommended items, while others will not. I'm kinda glad they don't - some recommended lists for meta packages can be quite large.

well anyway, 8.04 ubuntu-desktop pretty much included all the standard ubuntu packages that were left out of mythbuntu. 8.10 just installs gnome, i think. im going to install mythbuntu on top of ubuntu this time.
