View Full Version : [ubuntu] 2.6.27-7-generic hang on banner screen

I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 this weekend. My Dell 600c now hangs on reboot. It hangs in the linux startup where the ubuntu banner is displayed with an orange progress bar below.

The following work around seems to work.
After rebooting, I press Esc when grub starts to load. This displays a menu of kernel versions. Then I highlight 2.6.24.21-generic(the third item on the menu). The system seems to run fine with 2.6.24-21-generic.

I'm looking for tips on how to find out why the system appears to hang while starting up 2.6.27-7-generic.

Thanks

You need to see the output when it boots to see what causes it to hang. While in GRUB menu (after pressing ESC), highlight the first kernel, 2.6.27-7-generic, and press e to edit it. Move to the end and remove the last two options, quiet & splash. Then, boot it with b and see which process causes it to hang.

Taurus, thanks for your reply.

I removed the last two lines and started the boot.

Two messages appeared almost immediately:
MP-BIOS BUG:8254 timer not connected to IP-APIC
Kernel panic not syncing:VFS:unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)

Sounds like a problem to "root" option for the kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Can you post your /boot/grub/menu.lst (don't have to include all the lines that start with # since they are comments)? Need to make sure the "root=UUID=" is matching up for the new kernel with the new kernel.

Taurus,
Here is my menu.lst minus the comments and a few blank lines.
It looks like the UUID is the same for each version of the kernel.

Begin menu.lst ---->

What does your /etc/fstab look like then?

I also noticed that when the system hangs on the 2.6.27-7 kernel, the caps lock and scroll lock lights blink. The system does not respond to the keyboard or mouse.

I was unable to identify any additional useful error messages from the system log. Since 2.6.24 boots up fine I uninstalled 2.6.27.

I experienced the same symptoms. In my case, it is because of my wireless card. See this bug,
