I upgraded my office Dell Dimension desktop from an uptodate 8.04 to 8.10 and it worked perfectly. I then upgraded my home Dell XPS400 from an uptodate 8.04 to 8.10 and when it boots it locks up at the login screen and neither the USB mouse nor the USB keyboard are active. I am stuck. I have Knoppix installed in another drive and guess I can recover my valuable files to other media. Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated. It would be nice here to have a "restore previous version" option in the grub boot. I have tried all of the boot options with the same result.

You could download an Ubuntu 8.10 live cd and pull off all of your files to an external drive/network location. This would also show if there is a problem with 8.10 on the machine, or if the install is corrupted. If the cd did boot and you backed up all of the files, then you could do a fresh install and see if it was just an update failure, or something more serious.

I am having the same problem and posted my request for help. So far, nothing. Were you able to find a solution to get the mouse and keyboard working? Thanks for any advice.
