Simple question

This is a simple question that's managing to evade my understanding, despite web and forum searching. The question is:

What do the software repositories contain?

As far as I can tell, Main is the main repository containing nothing but free software.

Restricted is the repository for anything that's got restrictive licensing... but does that mean it includes proprietary software too?

And what are multiverse and universe? :confused:
