making a home partition and upgrading

I currently have hardy and I wanna install intrepid. My problem is, that when I installed ubuntu, I didn't know to make a home partition. I've read up on how to do that, and it says to use the live CD. Could I use the 8.10 live CD, or do I have to go find my 8.04?

also, could I change over to kubuntu all in one fell swoop?
