Hey guys,
I am a Mac user and I just bought an HP Mini 1000 and I am thinking of installing Ubuntu, instead of Windows.
I have never used Linux machines before. I was wondering, what are the similar programs for Ubuntu to these Mac programs listed below?
Thanks in advance.
1) Adobe Reader
2) Divx
3) Handbrake
4) iPhoto
5) iTunes
6) Limewire
7) Mac The Ripper
8) Skype
9) Toast Titanium

1) Evince is a lightweight pre-installed PDF reader, Adobe Reader is available from adobe.com
2) Totem, the default movie player, will install necessary codecs for you. Otherwise MPlayer (with SMPlayer) and VLC are very good.
3) What's that?
4) If you mean a photo app for your webcam, install cheese. If you mean a photo management tool for your holiday collection etc, FSpot is already installed.
5) Rhythmbox is already installed and can do almost everything iTunes can. Other good, complete programs are Exaile, Banshee and Amarok. Boils down to preference and need of specific features.
6) Transmission is a simple, lightweight, pre-installed bittorent client. Other more featureful ones are QBittorrent, Deluge and Azureus.
EDIT: whoops, I missed you there.. if you need a Gnutella client, both Limewire and Frostwire (a Limewire fork) are available. I'd strongly suggest Frostwire, since it doesn't implement DRM like Limewire does.
7) Is that for ripping DVDs, audio CDs or what exactly?
8 ) Skype
9) Brasero is a simple, lightweight pre-installed tool, k3b is a complete suite (comparable to Nero on Windows)
You will find that installing most applications in Linux is about as simple and much faster than on OSX, so you don't have to fear having to hunt a lot for useful programs.

Handbrake is available for Linux (though commandline only):

Great post. I'm a new Linux user (on a Core Duo MacBook) and this is very helpful in helping me get my start on the Ubuntu OS.
