I recently installed ubuntu 8.10 from USB and I have been using ubuntu on my laptop with compiz since 7.10 and it is now telling me desktop effects cannot be enabled. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What graphic card are you using? I have a simmilar problem with 8.04, after I made an kernel upgrade. It may a problem with drivers for graphic card (I have an Intel graphic card)

I think that I just did one, there was one in the update today and i don't think that the kernel is the problem. I always had one propriatary driver and now i have none. I think that was the intel graphics driver. How do you update the kernel/ download the correct driver?

I don't know if this helps but when i typed in compiz --replace (cause thats what people seem to be doing) it came out with.
