ubuntu 8.04 boots but doesn't go to login screen.

i installed ubuntu 8.04 on my dell inspiron 530 core 2 duo and it worked fine the first couple times but now i can't login because when i boot up i goes through the normal boot up process with the orange bar when the bar completes it comes to a black screen with a white loading cursor and the drive isn't working i 've even tried to let it go for half a day before and it stayed on that screen i've also tried the memtest and recovery mode boots but memtest finds no problems and recovery mode takes me to the same screen. i can't login what's the problem and how do i fix it?

Are u sure that u've not installed Ubuntu server version instead without the GUI?

If any GUI is installed, use the following command to start.
startx

Worked okay but could not get into synaptic. Had help but still could not get in. Did a reload and everything is back to normal but I have no sound.Tried reloading drives did not work. All problems started when downloading updates and the power went out.
