When I tried linux years ago someone told me that it is best to put you /home partition on a separate partition or better yet another drive

as I type I am d/ling ubuntu 8.10..

should I blow out the old (non /home) part or install on topor what?

any suggestions or ideas!?!?

It depends, the prescribed wisdom is to keep a seperate /home partition so your settings and files are maintained in the event of failure or a broken package etc.

If you are dual booting windows then ou need to be careful but if just Ubuntu then I go for three partitions - /, /home and swap.
