Hey, all.

I'm looking for a freeware or open-source Linux game resembling Heretic or Hexen--that is, a first-person shooter with magic/goblin-type fantasy elements. I'm not quite sure why, but I really dig that sword and sorcery stuff.

On a similar note, I'd also be interested in finding a RPG-type game in the vein of the old Eye of the Beholder series for DOS.

Either of these would be fabulous!

I've heard that Heretic's and Hexen's source codes were both released. Is there some way to install them on Ubuntu? I heard that to do so requires something called a "wad," which is apparently still not free. What's the deal with that?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If its ever released, Hexen: Edge of Chaos, a doom3 Total Conversion, looks pretty interesting. I think they're at the point where they just need mappers.

Is hexen a quake or a doom based game?

Either way, both engines were open sourced, so you can find some variation of those to run on linux. The "wad" file is a package of maps, skins, textures, etc used by the game engine. You can find all sorts of wads in the dark reaches of the internet...honestly, I cant tell you where because im actually not sure...and they are usually not legal anyway. However, if you actually own a copy of hexen, you should be able to extract the wad file yourself.
If you really want to play hexen, might as well play the real thing.

disclaimer: Im only going by what I know, I dont have hexen installed, so my facts may prove to be inaccurate.
