Knoppix does not get updated very often anymore, but it's still one of my favorite distros, in that it packs as many useful apps as it can onto one disk. The official Knoppix 5.3.1 comes only in DVD, but the smart guys who work on the Japanese version have made a smaller CD version:

ftp://ring.aist.go.jp/pub/linux/knoppix/iso/knoppix_v5.3.1CD_20080326-20080520-AC.iso
I posted instructions on the Knoppix forum for making an English ISO from the Japanese one:

And amaiman has kindly made a torrent available:

Knoppix is my jack-of-all-trades disc. I can usually count on it having what I need, which is why I like it so much.

Another good choice for a minimalistic version of knoppix is Kurumin (http://74.125.93.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.gdhpress.com.br/kurumin/&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dkurumin%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG&usg=ALkJrhhnnyEfarDgSjUkWoZ6T-m6xBZ_gg). It is a brazilian portugese distro. The light version of 7.0 is only 182Mb. Version 6.1 light is in both english & portugese, but it is difficult to find.
Hope this helps.

I have 5.1 installed and on usb live. Live is awesome, you actually have the freedom to do stuff by default.
I just got 5.3 but the only way I can get 5.3 to boot is by entering knoppix testdvd startup mode. After it checks the DVD (long time) it finally boots. It says the dvd is okay but something must surely be wrong with it since it fails to boot default mode.
I wanted to make it a USB live project but haven't had much luck with it.
